Open Settings (Cmd+,) and navigate to Appearance. Select your theme from the dropdown.

Independent of the theme, you can set the color mode:

  • Dark — always use dark mode
  • Light — always use light mode
  • Auto — follow macOS system appearance

When set to Auto, The Terminal switches between light and dark variants of your chosen theme based on your macOS system preference.

Themes apply globally to:

  • Terminal panels — background color, text color, ANSI color palette
  • Editor panels — syntax highlighting colors, background
  • UI chrome — sidebars, panels, borders, buttons
  • Browser panel — only the UI chrome, not the web content

The browser panel’s web content renders with its own styles — the theme doesn’t affect your web app’s appearance.
